Worcestershire will play host to several high profile sporting events over the next few months and to capture the spirit a campaign called #60daysofsport has been launched to get residents, local businesses and communities up and out playing and watching sports.
To help kick off the 60 days, the opening ceremony will be launched at Worcestershire County Cricket Club on 22 August 2015. The Cricket Club will play host to the Under-19s England v Australia for a One Day International at New Road, Worcester.
As well as the excellent fixtures at the County’s sporting grounds during the sixty days, the County will also host the European Wheelchair Basketball at Worcester Arena (28 August – 6 September) which is the qualifier for the Paralympics in Rio next year, the 10k run-bike-run (20 September) and the Aviva Tour Ride (4 October 2015) the official sportive of the Tour of Britain.
Cllr Ian Hopwood, Chairman of Worcestershire County Council said: “#60daysofsport is a great incentive for residents and businesses alike to get involved in sport. We all know that sport brings communities together and this is exactly what this campaign is all about. We have some world class sporting events in Worcestershire and we are keen to get everyone involved. I wish everyone taking part in either a professional or amateur capacity all the best of luck.”
To help residents and businesses to keep abreast of what events are taking place across the county – Destination Worcestershire is hosting a county wide event planner onto its website. This will become live after the opening ceremony on Saturday 22 August.
Cllr Mike Johnson, Cabinet Member for Sport, Leisure and Retail at Worcester City Council said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to raise the national profile of Worcester’s amazing sports offer.
“It’s also a great opportunity for local people to get involved and try out a new sport, whether that’s as a participant or as a spectator.”
Gary Woodman, Executive Director at the Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership, said: “With a plethora of sporting events scheduled, the #60daysofsport will undoubtedly provide a boost to the local economy and attract increased visitor numbers. I would also encourage local businesses to get involved through workplace challenges, attending events or capitalise on the many sponsorship opportunities available, as well as considering other opportunities that these high-profile sporting events could provide to your business.”
For any established sports team and local people who are looking to take part, we would encourage them to get involved by posting photos of their team in action onto Twitter and Facebook. Don’t forget to use the hashtags #60daysofsport and #WorldClassWorcs. Partner organisations will then use these images throughout the campaign and try and retweet as many as they possibly can.
As part of the campaign, there will also be some events dedicated for businesses – for example, the UK Trade and Investment event on 28 September 2015 at Sixways Stadium regarding ‘Winning sales in global sports projects.’
Businesses across the county have been asked to take part in a Workplace Challenge on 12 August at the University Arena for the upcoming European Wheelchair Basketball Championships. The Championships, from 28 August to 6 September will see teams from across Europe compete at Worcester Arena and to help get businesses in the mood – the organisers are giving businesses the chance to have a go at Wheelchair Basketball.
Teams of 8 will be offered a session in the basic skills and rules of the sport followed by a round robin of matches, playing for a selection of exclusive prizes including signed GB merchandise and tickets to the European Championships. All equipment will be provided and no previous experience is needed as training will be provided on the night.*
A closing ceremony for the #60DaysofSport campaign will be held at Sixways Stadium the ground of the newly promoted Worcester Warriors in October. The Warriors will play their first game of the season in the Premiership and will help close the official #60daysofsport campaign.
So if there was ever more of a reason to get on a bike, kick a ball, swim a few lengths, putt a few holes, run a few kilometres or score a try – now is the time with the launch of #60daysofsport.
