The Cyber Resilience Alliance, a partnership of LEPs who specialise in cyber business and industry, have published a new ‘Science and Innovation Audit’ to enable the region to grow its exports around the world.
The Science and Innovation Audit has been developed to enhance both industry and research, playing an important element of the Place foundation in the modern Industrial Strategy that seeks to ensure the UK’s cities, towns and rural areas reach their full potential.
Recognised as the largest cyber cluster outside of London, the Cyber Resilience Alliance has been able to draw upon the expertise and collaborative working of 4 Local Enterprise Partnerships, Worcestershire, Marches, Gloucestershire and Swindon & Wiltshire. The Cyber sector has been identified as one of the fastest growing sectors and an area of high growth potential in all 4 of these LEP areas.
The region is able to boast some of the UK’s biggest names in UK defence and security including QinetiQ in Worcestershire, BAE Systems Applied Intelligence in Gloucester, Babcock in Swindon and GCHQ in Cheltenham. The Audit also recognised the region’s ability to tap into sustained investment in aligned technology, including increased investment and adoption of innovative technologies in the region, e.g, the Worcestershire 5G testbed.
Research has shown that there are approximately 40,250 employees across cyber security, IT, digital and defence industries across Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Gloucestershire, Swindon and Wiltshire. The digital technology economy in these areas alone are creating jobs at 2.8 times the rate of the rest of the economy.
Gary Woodman, Chief Executive of Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership, said: “This is a fantastic example of four Local Enterprise Partnerships working together for the benefit of an entire industry of businesses in the cyber sector. By identifying our strengths and opportunities for growth, we are now confident that we can take our cyber offer around the world with the confidence of attracting even more interest.”
