Update from Worcestershire LEP Chief Executive, Gary Woodman: April 2017

We are continuing to see a great amount of progress on our Growth Deal projects and following last month’s additional Growth Deal allocation of £17.5m, it really is an exciting time for businesses in the county.

Superfast Worcestershire continues to expand its availability in the county and I am pleased to say that both Worcester Six and Cathedral Square will soon be open for public viewing. It is great to see these developments progressing well and I am pleased that we have recently had the opportunity to showcase Worcester Six and other investment opportunities on the International Stage, at MIPIM 2017.

This month has also highlighted the world class businesses we have locally and I would like to congratulate Gtech, Lioncourt Homes and Brintons who have all been recognised in the latest Sunday Times BDO Profit Track 100 business list of the most profitable companies in the country. I do believe that local companies benefit from a fantastic local business environment and there is still a chance for companies to improve this infrastructure further. There are now less than two weeks remaining to leave feedback on the Government’s Industrial Strategy and I would urge all businesses to have their say on this hugely significant national plan to improve living standards and economic growth.

Skills forms a large part of the Government’s Industrial Strategy and I am pleased to see that skills events continue to draw large audiences in Worcestershire. Over 1,600 young people and students attended the Worcestershire Skills Show 2017 and met with some of our fantastic employers before participating on a range of employment-based activities. Apprenticeships formed part of the Skills Show and with the National Apprenticeship Levy coming into effect today, it’s great to see how large local employers like Sanctuary Housing are committing to grow their business by recruiting even more apprentices.

As we enter the new financial year, I am confident that we will continue to see success for the businesses of Worcestershire and I look forward to celebrating our county’s achievements at the Worcestershire LEP Annual Conference on 1 December. Please do make sure you save the date.
