Worcestershire continues to bridge the gap between schools and businesses

Worcestershire continues to be one of the top three areas in England for its performance in the national Careers Hub programme.

The Worcestershire Careers Hub held its end of year celebration event back in June with careers leaders from schools and educational institutions attending to learn about the progress Worcestershire is making and the next wave of development with careers guidance in schools.

The Careers Hub programme is an initiative developed by The Careers and Enterprise Company and works to engage all the schools within a set boundary to achieve a series benchmarks to improve careers provision for young people across the country.

Worcestershire was one of the first areas to receive a Careers Hub back in 2018, and has since gone onto be one of the leading careers hub nationally, receiving a second careers hub in 2020 to also bring in middle schools into this programme.

The Gatsby Benchmarks are a framework for school leaders, headteachers, and careers advisors to assess the development of their pupils in employability skills. Via the work of the Careers Hubs, schools can achieve their benchmarks with the support of businesses and employers, providing guidance, advice and insight into their organisation, sectors and the world of work.

At the end of year celebration event, held at Worcestershire County Cricket Club, the Worcestershire Careers Hub delivery team presented to careers leaders about the achievement made in the last academic year, with Worcestershire achieving 6.63 average benchmarks per school, above the national average of 5.8.

The team also provided an update on new support programmes and updates to existing programmes, as well as outlining the next wave of careers support events for the next academic year, including set piece events like the Worcestershire Skills Show.

Judy Gibbs, Director of Skills for the Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership, said: “The team and I are pleased to share the continued success of the Inspiring Worcestershire programme and the Worcestershire Careers Hub and I’d like to thank our schools and our businesses for their hard work and determination to help the next generation in Worcestershire. However, we always want to continue improving and widening the support to young people and our schools, therefore we need the support of more local organisations to allow us to provide effective careers guidance, showcase more pathways into the industries in the county and ultimately create our future workforce.

“If you’re a local employer in Worcestershire, join the Inspiring Worcestershire programme and help us to help you. Help us showcase your business to the next generation and we can help your organisation to build a talent pipeline for the future.”

Organisations looking to support the Worcestershire Careers Hub can support via a number of options including, work experience opportunities, mock interview support, careers talks and attendance at careers events. Organisations can give as little or as much time as they can, but any support can help to engage with a young person and inspire them.
